Kenn , Don't draw the knot too tightly and pull the tail hard. The knot will spill. If you have any doubt about a knot seize the tail with some small stuff.

How t tie a bowline

If you are a rabbit hole person let me suggest a situation where your solution can get you into trouble. you fall overboard or jump and someone throws you a line. How do you secure yourself to the line? or you have to tie one to the boweye of your dingy by reaching over the bow. You can't see to thread the bunny hole....

I tie a bowline (stolen from a Special Operations engineer NCO) like so;
place the working end in my left hand and running end in my right palms up.
The knot will be in my left hand and the running end is sized to make the loop and the tail
Turn my left hand inward (palm down) making a loop in the working end
With my index finger grab the working end that is further down the line and pull it through the loop till it just clears the loop. You have to be able to do this with one hand. This is where the knot will be
Take the running end and with your right hand thread it through the loop you are holding running it from finger base to finger tip. The amount of line you run through will be the tail and the rest will make the loop so here is your chance to get the loop size right.
Grab with your right hand the running end tail and loop right at the loop you still have in your left hand forming a bight around the loop in your left hand.
Let go of the loop in your left hand and pull the working end.
This is particularly handy when it is dark, or you are in a hurry. If you are in the water and just run the running end around your body before the tie you have the bowline around your body when you finish.

For that situation, I was taught the following:

(A picture is worth a thousand words, and an animation contains several pictures. You do the math ;) )
