I've been keeping this piece of metal since it came with the boat, thinking that one day its purpose would occur to me. After a year I still haven't figured it out, and so I asked the previous owner, only to find that he also got it with the boat and didn't know what it was either... Any ideas ? It's about 6" long made of 1/4" round bar.

It is a portable cleat that can be inserted between dock boards and rotated 90deg to allow you to tie a dock line where there is not permanent dock cleat. West Marine was selling them a few years ago.

It's a temporary cleat to go between dock boards. You stick it through a slot between two boards,, turn it 90 degrees and tie to the ring.

Fairly light duty so I would only use it for short term docking
