Don't know if these are nautical or not but saw them on a boat. They are metal and heavy for the size. Don't think they are lead, more like steel. Any ideas?

Looks like a Caltrop, whichever way it lands there's spikes up, if it's as big as it looks maybe for use against wheeled vehicles, troop trucks.

I had never heard of a caltrop so I looked it up. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caltrop That is ONE menacing-looking weapon! Could it be a self- righting wheel chock? If so I would expect to see it on the trailer or in the tow vehicle instead of on the boat. But I really think it could be used as such. (Assuming it's not a landmine.)

It kinda looks to have something to do with a cannonball. A small holder, not unlike a brass monkey?

Ken may have it right as I can remember seeing a large version of these on a shoreline somewhere, presumably to keep boats from landing. (I have traveled all over the world in my 21 yrs in Navy & Army) Chief

If you look close you will see that the ends have what used to be a bearing surface on them (not a point so it can't be a caltrop) My bet is that this was the muffler bearing for the flux capacitor in a bigger boat.
Seriously it has 6 bearing surfaces at 90 degrees to each other so I'm really thinking it is some part of either a gyroscope for a BIG boat.

Couldn't a caltrop have detachable points on it that remain in the tire, such as the stop-strip, used by law enforcement to halt a chase?

I KNOW!! It is a "What is That!"

It is fun to mess with people and make random things like that so they try to figure out what it is only to tell them, when they ask you, that it is a What is that.
