This black Item is attached to the out side of the hot water heater, what is it and the brand??? It leaks and I need to replace it.

thanks all!!!
It is a check valve. Not sure what brand it is, there are any number of them out on the market. The check valve prevents hot water from backing up into the cold water supply. This can be an issue when heating water with the heat exchanger as it will reach ~160° and create a lot of back pressure.

You may have to rework the whole inlet. The big box hardware stores will have them for around $10.

The rust on the tank by the inlet is a tell-tale some other trouble is brewing. That might be correctable or the heater might be nearing end-of-life. Either way, IMHO it should also be addressed.

It doesn't matter which check valve you use for that application, as long as it is the correct size, and can take the heat of the hot water.

And installed in the correct orientation.

Be aware, some check valves are designed to work in any orientation and some need to be horizontal.
