... all over my boat? Went to the boat Sunday, and the rigging was covered with what looked like long strands of spider web. I'm talking streaming 10-15 feet off anything it could attach to. The boat (and everyone else's) looked like a movie set version of a wrecked pirate ship. Out on the lake, you could see gobs of the stuff floating along in the wind. Strange...

It's a little early, but does it look like someone's preparing for a big Halloween party.....?

spiders

had the same thing happen to me a fews weeks ago. i was told that they are a small spider that uses a thread and some wind to travel on. not sure if that is true. i picked a ton of them about two miles out on lake superior.

If it looks like a duck...

Chances are they look like spider webs because that's what they are. They coated my stays about 3 weeks ago. Tiny little buggers that ride the wind right after they hatch. I was picking them up 1/4 mi. out on a lake.

Plan on it every year bout this time..

It is as sure a thing as the mud dobbers. How are thinks on Carlyle? I was at Boulder for three years but have been on Lake Shelbyville for the last two. Ever hit anything hard out by that south silo? Take care, Jim

Tom,

Last time we were out, the boat was covered with the spider streamers. Time before that there was a mayfly hatch that would have made any decent trout fisherman cry.

jimb ...

My arachnophobic sailing friend is going to love hearing that there was a tiny spider at the end of each of those. jimb, just a slight little bump near the south silo, but about 10:00 at night in about 20 mph, I had a semi-novice friend at the helm while I was working the boat, lost track of where I was, and hit stuck hard as could be up by the little island. Four months ago and I'm still kicking myself for my negligence. With a 4.5 ft draft, you sure have to watch what you're doing on Carlyle. Lake's been great this year. They opened a new marina at Keysport, which took a lot of boats from Boulder, but I'm staying. I like that end of the lake, and Boulder's on the cooler side in mid summer. What do you sail on Shelbyville? Doesn't look like a good keelboat lake. Tom

These little guys must be everywhere

Most of you are writing from the Great Lakes region, but Bob was responding from Nevada, and I had the exact same streamers coming from the top of my mast at a mooring in Groton, Conn. last month. Whatever produces these must be spread out over the whole country. Anyone know the species? I've only ever found itsy bitsy spiders now and then, never any big ones or very many, but lots of streamers...

Im sailing an Oday 25 center board

Shelbyville is like a 1/2 hour closer for me. You couldn't ask for nicer people there. Tacks can be short. Glad to hear Carlyle is doing well. I plan to move back some day to keep thinks interesting. Jim
