What is this strange plug?

Hello
Does anyone know the purpose of this strange plug? It is in the same
side of the keel as are all the other original holes..almost at the
bottom of the keel near rudder..

Hi Ray,

I can confirm Brian's suggested answer. I had a look at the photo you posted. This plug can be removed, whilst the boat is out of the water, to drain the bilge. It's particularly important to do this in cold climates to prevent damage due to water freezing in the bilge. Even more important to put it back in before launching!

Cheers
John

That's the drain plug you really need to open if your Vega is on the hard and the boat is left in freezing conditions. Expanding ice can split the keel if you don't. Have a bucket to catch about five gallons of dirty oily water if you do remove the plug.

Thank you!

I think this is propably what it is made for..now I must open it to see if
there comes anything out. The plug is so old and there is nothing
screwdriver to crab on, so i may have to drill it out..2013/7/11 n4lbl alan.schulman@...

No , dont drill it out. There is a bronze nut inside the bilge that holds it in place . Unscrew the nut instead. It must be size 26 or 28 European. If you lie doun on the flor and stetch your arm you can reach it and unscrew it from the inside.
