I acquired a chest full of sailing stuff from a friend whose dad passed away. The old gent who owned it had and raced an AMF Sunfish. Alas, the boat was in perfect condition and had tons of extras (mast, sail, trailer, etc.) and I could have bought it all for $400 but my wife said I don't use my O'Day DS II enough to justify owning another "lawn ornament" so it was sold to someone else for $1500. But I digress. Int he chest of stuff was the hinged piece of copper or brass, I'm not sure of the material. When it is "closed" it seems like there may be a magnet holding it closed. It is 7" long. I have no clue what it may be used for but suspect it is for some kind of sailboat rigging because everything else in the chest is sailboat related. It may fit on the tiller someplace or the centerboard? Thanks in advance for any ideas!

YES! Of course it is! I would not have figured that out in a million years. Thank you, that's what is so great about this forum--more knowledge and willingness to help than one could ever hope for.

That is a grommet press to put grommets in canvas.
Wow... @Benny17441 how did you see that? I starred at that for five minutes and decided it was some one-off engineer's widget for a long lost project. AND I even own a grommet press so you would think it was obvious... but mine is two separate pieces.

Answer: He's simply brilliant.
We've all read hundreds of his contributions. Why are we not surprised? :)

Thanks guys, that is quality vintage tool to work on hard materials or heavy canvas. You can get replicas for lighter work on E-Bay for $5 to $10.
