My apologies for two posts in a day, but I had to ask: Can anyone identify the items in the attached photo that I found under the engine after I changed the oil, filter, and anti-freeze in the raw water system? (Penny included for sizing purposes)

Your help would be much appreciated. I'm still scouring the Yanmar service manual for the 2GM20F.

They look like a spring and pivot pin with retainer, maybe from a fuel governor or something? Might be "extra parts" from a previous project. I mean, the engine runs alringht, right?

Extra parts

Back in the tech school days, the instructor sneak a couple of extra nuts and washers in your tray to throw you off !! Nasty but make you think before taking things apart.

Ever since then, I learned to laid down a couple of upside down duct tape in the parts tray to stick the parts.

Re: Extra parts

The round, shiny thing appears to be a Obama dollar.

They are probably not part of the raw or engine cooling system. My bet is a fuel system part from a previous maintenance. I don't recall ever seeing anything in the oil system that has a doohicky like that thing beside the spring. Certianly not something that would fall off during a routine oil and filter change.

what amazes me about all those little parts is that they didn't fall all the way to about 6 fathoms deep in the bilge...every time i drop something in the back all the way from my rudder shaft to the front of the engine it goes in to Mach 3 mod and straight to the bottom...

Just start a left over parts collection in an empty can. They always come in handy when you are trying to rig a quick fix repair.

Wow, I never realized that diesel engines were like IKEA furniture with all the extra parts.

Thank you all for the feedback, though. I'll keep an eye out for any suspicious behavior in the engine compartment (explosion, spontaneous combustion, dead people in the aft berth, etc.) and will just blame you all if there is any. For the time being she's running like a finely tuned sewing machine...a very noisy finely tuned sewing machine, but still.

Cheers!

PS: Oh, and Woddy - the max depth in the Chesapeake is more like six inches. ;-)

Ever see the movie "Doc Hollywood?" The mechanic returns his freshly rebuilt Porsche to Doc with a little bag of spare parts and a shrug. "There are always a few parts leftover!"

For insurance against such 'oh-ohs' get yourself a shop manual of your engine.

Most Yanmar dealers have them or order direct from the 'master' Yanmar distributors.

That looks like the fuel pump primer lever from my old volvo md7a. How did it get on your boat?

Re: Obama Dollar

It is really shameful that one's hatred and distain for the President of the United States so colors one's thinking that it comes out in something so innocuous as a sailboat form.

It's sad, not funny and such comments belong elsewhere!

Looks like parts from your fuel supply/lift pump.
Is your fuel lift pump manual lever working?
