What is this hook for?

I have seen this same type of hook in pictures of other boats, and mine has one as well. There is another similar u shaped hook/brace on the opposite end of the seat. I suspect it is for a backrest perhaps, but there is no long board I can find that would fit in the slot - that length. Any thougths? Thanks!! The pic shows the u shaped hook.

I had one

on my 1977 hunter 30. It was for a back rest when sitting at the table to eat.....it always was in the way, so kept it in the garage and not on the boat. Your previous owner (or owner before) might still have it. George

Two thoughts

I'm not sure from the pic but it could be a)lee board/cloth hook or b) galley belt. The lee board or lee cloth would be if the opposite hook is about 6' away. It would hold you in the bunk while sleeping under sail and heeled over. If the opposite hook is 3 foot away, there is a strap that you lean against whilst cooking in a rough seaway (not recommended) This also assumes there was or is a stove infront of that belt.
