What is this and we’re does it go?

I got a 1984 C30 mk1 with a universal diesel 5411 a little over a year ago. In a box of fuel filters and oil filters I found this.
I don’t know where it goes.
Help! New to diesel engines.

That looks like the guts of a water strainer. Check the raw water inlet to your engine for a plastic strainer. Inside should be a screen. It looks like this was an old screen that got gunked up with baarnacles and removed. Doesn't look like anything related to fuel at all.

I didn't even notice the brass looking object. I thought it was something under the bag

When I first saw this I thought it might be a breather element that goes in the cylinder head cover for crankcase ventilation. But on second thought probably not.

Whare the dimensions?

Thanks for the reply’s.
It’s about1/4” in diameter and 5/8” long with a cupped cutout in one end.
I think I’m just gonna throw caution to the wind and keep going.

I checked the HURTH TRANSMISSION ILLUSTRATIONS: and universal diesel 5411 engine manual diagrams because you are to change the fluids at 25 hours
But no luck.

Years ago I saw a fuel filter for a small gasoline outboard engine that looked like this. Sorry but I don't remember who manufactured the engine.

I have seen this thing before too. I rebuilt a lot of 1950s Johnson Seahorse 2 stroke outboard. But I can’t pin it down.

It is a filter for an inline fuel filter that delivers a small volume of fuel similar to the one linked below. Do you have a diesel heater installed? If so, that is the filter for the fuel supply.

It's a sintered bronze filter, one common usage was on the fuel intake of carburetors, remember them? Anyway lots of applications.

I have a 110A Series High Pressure Fuel Filter/Water Separator. I looked at diagrams but nothing there either that I can see.
I had water intrusion to the fill cap and got diesel fuel bug, and both filters were plugged with wax.

I don’t have a fuel heater.
Engine failed out about 2 miles away from the slip and had to sail it in.
So I removed 20 gallons of fuel, flushed out all the lines, scrubbed out tank with brush on a drill, inspected it with a borescope, replaced filter, and add 5 gallons of fuel with Diesel Biocide.
What fun all that was. I am going to dispose of the old fuel, although I did polish it but diesel fuel is not a forever fuel is my understanding.
Have run it in the slip in gear 5 or 6 times fo a total of 20 minutes.

Ah, the joys of old boats.

If it is not for a heater, then it may be for some other liquid fuel. A pressurized alcohol stove might have one. Look for a fuel line of some sort and fitting in the fuel line that could be disassembled to change filters.

Or it could be something the prior owner left around to make you wonder and ask questions.

There was a pressurized alcohol stove that I took off. There’s plenty enough things to go wrong on a motor sailboat.
He was a kind ornery old cuss and may soul rest in peace.

Now, that is one classic runabout with two vintage outboards! No doubt, a collector’s item.

Hoping that it was something left over from something else. No one has said it is part of the universal diesel 5411s fuel system.
