What is this access for?

I am still working on getting the oDay 19 finished. Good news is the topside is now water tight after filling in the 6' gash.

I was working in the cabin this morning and started working on the centerboard pocket that had a crack in it. Upon sanding a little more it came clear that this was cut out at the factory or by someone and repaired the incorrect way.

My question is will I need access to this in the future or is it ok to glass it in correctly so it does not crack out again. Or I could make a cover that bolts on over it.

Someone cut the fiberglass to have access to the centerboard tube, probably attempting to track down and repair a leak. Then they replaced the cut-out section with a "functional" repair.

If the boat keeps the water on the correct side, you should never need to access this area.

It is part of the cabin pan and not part of the area that keeps water out of the boat. A repair can be made so that the cuts and gel coat all match. It could be a fun project for you. For now you can cover it with something but that would be just one more thing that might need to be maintained.
