might be storage for a map, roller it up and stow it.

Think for a second. It helps to stiffen up the structure.

Is there a drain hole in the inside?

it could be for stowage of a winch handle, boat pole, chart or some other item that some previous owner decided they wanted out of sight but needed readily accessible....

Perhaps to lift the topsides out of the mold before flipping it over and attaching to the hull?

Don't have that on my '85 either.. does it look like a factory deal or more like a PO modification (maybe to suspend a bilge pump hose or something?).

Cheers,
Brad

no guys. I saw it on one of the boats being built and was advised structural.

If it's structural, why isn't it on both sides of the cockpit seats? It looks like it was part of the original build though. It's about 4" diameter. It really seems like it should be a holder for something, I just have no idea what.

Re: What is the tube of fiberglass under the cockpit on an h

4" in diameter!!!.... thats big. way over-kill for any necessary structural member that is only a foot long.
as the tube appears to be fiberglass so its more than likely original.
if I were you i would find a use for it, bolt some hooks to the side of it for hanging docklines, or your extra anchor rode... lay the winch handles in the tube when stowed away...
take advantage of what is there and be glad you dont have to drill more holes to the outside of the boat to do it...

I'll probably store some dinghy oars or maybe a fire extinguisher in it. I just hadn't ever been down under the cockpit that far (I was installing a new swim ladder on the port side transom) and it was bugging me as to it's function. Thanks for all the advice everybody! :)

I have the same "piece" under my cockpit. My first thought was that it was structural. I have a hairline crack on my cockpit floor going port to starboard. I thought perhaps this was an after market addition to strengthen the floor. It's not in any usable area of the lazarette so I'm sure it wasn't put in there for any utilitarian reason. Running wires to the transom? sure. Wench handle? haha heck no! So I'm going with my gut instinct and with CDC on this one.

If it's for structure, then why isn't there one on each side in the same place? It's only on the port side.
