what is the other hose for?

There are 2 through hull fittings with ball valve shut-offs in my head. One supplies the toilet but I'm not sure what the other one supplies. Both have the same size hoses but the one I can't figure out disappears through the rear bulkhead in the head. It could be for the raw water pump for engine cooling but there is no filtering device over the through hull to keep "stuff" from being sucked through the raw water pump. Any ideas?

Head Exhaust/

is it the "output" for the head? Should be on "Y valve" to divert to holding tank or over the side (when out 3 miles or more) Marc

Head hoses/valves

On my 281 there are two throughhulls with valves to the left of the head. The forwardmost is the raw water intake for the head. It brings in saltwater when you pump/flush the head. The rearmost hose/valve is the head discharge leading to sea. It is not legal to use that and dump sewage within the three mile coastal limits of the US. There is a third hose which goes through the aft bulkhead and leads into the cockpit sail locker. There it goes into a Y valve. This hose takes the sewage from the head when it is flushed to the Y-valve. When the valve is in the forward position (there is a silver metal piece which can be switched) the head dumps overboard through the through hull in the head. When the Y-valve is switched to the aft position, the head dumps into the holding tank in the back of the sail locker. The tank is then pumped out via the black screw cap on the stern deck.

Thanks But,

the State Fish and Game folks (I'm on an inland lake) just inspected the boat last week to make sure that if there was a "Y" valve that it was closed and tagged. They said that there is no "Y" valve. They looked for it aft of the holding tank in the lazerette. Should they have been looking in the forward part of the lazerette near the fuel tank?

Y valve

That is correct. It is located directly aft of the fuel tank. When you look in the locker, it is directly underneath the opening (next to your left knee). It should be a black hose and the Y valve looks like a silver lever with a spring on it and I think a little red piece about the size of a sewing thimble. Doesn't really look like a valve at all.

...speaking of B281 heads...

...recently, the pump handle moves up after use (will not stay down) and I have water entering the bowl although the lever is in the dry position (a gurgle noise is heard when water enters the bowl)...do I have a wet/dry valve problem or a discharge valve (joker) problem...or is it something else...any comments welcome.

mine too

I'm not sure if it is really a malfunction but if you close the thru-hull shut-off after pumping out, the bowl will stay dry. If it is a problem I'll be interested in the fix as well.
