What is the original species of wood?

I have an older O'Day Mariner boat, and when I bought it, the previous owner informed me that he put new floor timbers in. The only problem is he made them out of pine. I was wondering if anyone knew what the original species of wood was in an O'Day Mariner boat. There are a few original (or what appear to be original) floor timbers in that are pine, and to me this doesn't make sense. Why is something that is usually structural made out of pine?

Rhodes 19 was oak ... if I remember right

and that was about the same body by Oday ... the new rhodes 19 uses fiberglass stringers. The Oak seemed to last 20+ years and at about 25 seem to get spongy. Vic "Seven"

I built a small boat and the specs for it were to use pine for the frame. The trick was finding boards with no knots with about 12 feet of length for continuous pieces. They are lightweight, strong and flexible. Oak is heavy very strong and not very flexible. So it depends on the job what you need for wood. dave
