What is the difference between a 26D and a 26S?

Rod and Dave both sail Ds. That tell you anything?

Well, I like my S, for no other reason than Dave26M and Ramblin'Rod both have Ds. You don't want to be lumped in with those two. Especially the way they're all kissy-kissy lately on this board. They used to fight tooth and nail anytime the other would post. Always entertaining and educational. The daggerboard vs swing center board difference is the most obvious, but there are some other slight variations in the hull -- higher coamings on the S, flotation moved into the V-berth ceiling on the S, I think it's under on the D, isn't it? And did the S start coming from the factory with different railings? Seems like I see stearn rails on all S models but some Ds don't have them.

my 26D

Sorry about the late weight reply -- repsonded before I got all the way through the thread. I bought an 87 26D a couple of years ago. You should not have any worries about trailering -- I was surprised how light it seemed when moving it around a dock and repositioning it on the trailer. Not that you can move it around while it's not at least partially in the water, but it really isn't a heavy boat when the ballast is empty. I often pull her out, take down the mast and secure things while the ballast is draining, then back her back into the water to reposition her on the trailer if needed. As other have pointed out, I imagine any differences in handling and speed between the S and D are likely minor compared to sail condition and user ability. One thing that you will likely want (if the boat you buy hasn't already got one) is a modified rudder to increase upwind handling in stiff winds. I'm sure you can find a thread (or dozens) about how to make the modifications yourself. It's pretty simply -- I did it myself. And, I've fond it does make a world of difference.

What should I expect?

I looked at a 1992 26S yesterday. The guy was asking $7000, and would not come down, yet... The hull was very good (shiny, not too many scratches, no gouges, no bottom paint) with the exception of the rub rail, which was damaged pretty bad, I beleive it could be replaced rather easily(Fiberglass underneath rub rail is okay). There was one spot with spider cracks about 5" in diameterI found on the port side, looks like it hit the dock a little hard, but did not look too serious. Up on deck there was three places in the non-skid surface where something hit hard enough to cause similar damage like spider cracks 5" diameter. Looks like will not leak. Inside the cabin, needs a good cleaning and the cushions all need replacing, other cosmetic work should be done inside as well. Trailer is factory original. Looks like it will work okay, but it's a little rough, I'd prefer a galvanized trailer with brakes. Sails: Genoa jib, gennaker, and spinnaker Boom vang, Topping lift. A few other accessories included. Questions: Does this sound like a good deal? Am I expecting too much at this price range? The add made it sound like it was really great, I thought I'd be taking it home. But when I saw it, I was a little disappointed.

Here's what I say about 7 Gs for an S.

Not too bad of a price. Exactly what I paid for a 92. Yeah, I've seen them in better shape for less since I bought mine, but I did the same thing you did: waited 'til Spring to decide I wanted one. You should have been looking 3 months ago. Now, everyone's got boats on the brain. He'll probably sell it. I will add this. I missed out on a Mac or two that was in a little better shape, for a little less than the one I got, because I was sure I could take my time, think it over, and let the seller think I was cooling off. Didn't work. With the internet, you can virtually find every 26C in the world that is for sale right now. You can see what they're all going for. If it's what you want, and you got the money or the bank will give you the money, get it! Life is too damn short to worry about it any longer. You should be sailing this next weekend.

The 89D is a hybrid

It has the S deck and the D hull...although someone once told me that the 89 coamings are not quite as high as the coamings on the S, but in pictures they look the same to me.

no Motor?

7k sounds kinda high w/o a motor, if it has an 8 or higher it sounds pretty good to me... the sail inventory is nice! (it has a Main, right?) are they in good shape? good running rigging? if you plan to weekend on it, you could end up spending a lot to get it where you like it... so you may want to look for one with more interior mods. one things for sure..... theres a lot of these girls out there!

popularity

We just recently joined the local Ninnescah Sailing Assoc. I'm amazed at how many Macs there are in the boatyard here! The Catalinas probably come in second. I think my '92 is the newest and only 26S with the exception of a beauty of a 26M tied up in one of the slips. I can't tell what models all the rest are, none have an open transom like mine. My wife loves the roominess of the M. Does it belong to anyone here?

Excellent Deal...

are you sure it doesn't have a big hole in the bottom??? Congrats! You are going to love that boat and very nicely equipped it is. That's really going to get under Marshall's skin...now he's gonna think he got screwed ;)

It's Tiller Time!

Glad to see your response! I thought it looked like a good deal. My original intent though was to take my time, maybe sleep on it. I did a lot of research prior to actually looking but I only ended up looking at 3 boats. So I sorta felt like I might be making a rash decision. But at the same time I thought Marshall's advice was good, not to wait, someone else would buy it if I thought about it too long. Don't get me wrong the boat does need some work. There is a few gouges in the gel coat, I think I can fix pretty easy. The rudder for instance has some real bad gouges where it came into contact with a spinning propeller. Inside the cabin, new cushions, etc.

Still a great deal...

I bought mine new...with the motor, instruments, safety gear, and other odds and ends, I paid three times more than you just did...and I still had to buy a genny, spinnakers, furler, tiller pilot, dingy, all the controls and turn the cabin into home...not to mention all the other stuff I've done to it...that's one reason why I'll never, ever sell it...the other reason is my girls think it's a pet. I would say you got a tremendous deal on that baby!

I feel lucky!

Ya can't beat that new boat smell though. Must have been exciting to get delivery. By the way, the name of the boat is "Tiller Time", I like it, I think I'll keep it. Anyway Tiller Time's cabin sure does not smell anything like new... That's where the cleanup and upgrades come in. But looking forward to working on her.
