What is the best way to christen (or re-christen) a sailboat?

Hello All!


What is the best way to christen (or re-christen) a sailboat?

I am preparing to sail (name withheld until I surprise my girlfriend) Tylercraft-26 from Lindenhurst, NY to Bucksport, Maine.

I want to re-name her and I think it won't be bad luck because I am going to do a lot of work on her to bring her back into ship-shape and Bristol fashion.

So, when the big day comes and we are ready to launch her (not on a Friday), how does one do that age-old ceremony? I plan to buy a bottle of champagne for the event for sure.

Any tips on what I can also do to add weight to the ceremony?

Do it with lots of flare and lots of alcohol. Hiring (or dressing up) as a pirate to read the appropriate poem would be my choice. I'd make up my own poem, if you're good at that kind of stuff. Just make it wacky fun! DON'T break the bottle of champagne on the bow - waste of good champagne!!

How about ceramic jugs filled with rum? Like the pirates used. Yeah, I like the pirate theme. I played one once for a kids' birthday party.
