My 2006 Hunter 33 has a roll furling jib - I am looking to increase my sail size and wanted to see what is the best size Genoa to purchase.

In my opinion it depends on whether you race or cruise and wind conditions where you sail. Need to consider handling and tacking issues with a large genoa sail.

A very illuminating and interesting discussion on co.com for those of you who might be in the market for a new jib.

Big Jib or Small Jib

Please read all three pages. Enjoy.

The review in Practical Sailor liked the original 110. Hunters in general seem to carry large mainsails and smaller headsails with the fractional rig. "spreader chafe is a downside of the B&R rig." Have you got an asym spinnaker already?

The sail plan for that boat calls for the 110. Any larger size will interfere with the riggin supports and will require extensive modifications. In any case the headsail is merely for balance and pointing as the boat's power comes from the massive roach mainsail made possible by the lack of a backstay B&R rigging.

Consider keeping the sail the same size, but get one with vertical battens made. If you need a light air sail, a code zero could be a solution.

Smaller boat (H 25 B&R rig) but I have exactly that set up. One other benefit of the B&R rig is the ability to have a larger roach main. With a 36” bow sprit and 8” mast crane, my code 0 can be flown in combination with the 110 jib.
