I need to replace the vents on my 1983 Catalina 30. I'm looking for recommendations on what to install that will be economical but also provide good circulation.

Really, unless your boat is on a mooring and if you have a decent battery set-up, simply run them from the panel or off the cabin light circuit with a switch. They are really only for when you are away from the boat.
Replacing the battery on the solar vent
Did you check the battery on your solar vents? If you pull the battery and the fan runs while exposed to the sun, then you know the battery is the problem. If your vent is a Nicro, it's an easy fix. Two screws hold the waterproof battery case to the unit and two more screws seal the unit. You can find a solar rechargeable NiCad C battery at Radio Shack. I bought mine on the web for $7 and now the vent works perfectly.
Thanks for the replies everyone, quite helpful. I did try changing the batteries last summer by matching the originals from Radio Shack. They worked for a couple of days and then died. I'm thinking that the solar charger is not working though am not sure that I could replace them even if I confirm they are dead. Is there anywhere to get parts for the Nicro's?
