...............Here is an idea I'm going to try I'm going to tape a bigger cardboard box inside at the spot ware I'm cutting. I will cut the hole and vacuum the box out from outside. I hope to get most of the dust.
Yes, when I cut the hole for my stove I used a 100mm x 2mm disc. Put all the gear on the bunk under the cockpit and taped a bedsheet over that area. Dust went everywhere else but not into that are under the cockpit. Likewise it took some cleaning but at least I didn't have to get into that bunk area below the cockpit to clean.

When I cut the hole for acess to the chocks and bow eye I will open the front hatch and tape a sheet across from the loo bulkhead to keep the dust in the V-berth area - vaccum on full suction of course.

I tape most of the areas...

....that I cut and then use a saber saw.

Still have to vacuum but it isn't all that bad. I bought one of those tools to use in tight places, but so far haven't used it yet.

Best tool I've found for holes in the hull...

.... has been a die grinder, It will create dust  or a....

....hole saw if you have one the right size, much less dust ,

Yes, I always mask with tape (and draw the cutting lines on the tape) before cutting fibreglass, otherwise you get a rough finish with chips coming off the gelcoat. I must open my wallet and buy a decent set of hole saws :) as my current 'el cheapos' are not up to doing fibreglass, particularly on boats where the holes are inevitably in places where looks count.

Sumner, any idea how many revs your die grinder is running at when you cut fibreglass? I used my dremel on a few jobs and it threw up more dust than the 2mm disc on the angle grinder:confused: .

20,000 to 24,000 depending on air pressure. Here you can get them from Harbor Freight for $10 to $20. At home I run it on a 2 stage 220 volt compressor and don't run out of air. We bought a $99 HF compressor to leave in FL with the boat there and it runs on 110 and runs out of air after probably 30 seconds or so. Then wait a minute and start again.

The nice thing is that compared to trying to use a dremel it is very fast cutting and will remove a lot of material fast.

Here I'm marking...

... a hole for a vent and ...

...it probably took less than 30 seconds to make it.

It is really handy to get into some tight areas like....

....above when I had to eat some of the inner liner away to get the bildge pump discharge line past it...

Thanks Sumner. My dremmel 'look alike' is variable speed and does 8,000 - 35,000 revs. Sounds like I need to either use higher speed or larger bits. I did buy a set of good quality bits and they are larger than those that came with the machine but still not as large as what you use on the DG.

I have been looking at buying a compressor for a long time now. An air sander would be great when I get around to taking the bottom paint off as I could use water with the machine. Have a good RUPES sander but not game to put water anywhere near it - also suspect it may run a bit too fast (does 7,00 rpm) to be using on fibreglass. Have also recently spoken to a guy who runs a rattle gun off his compressor for getting rust off steel trailers and things - uses water to keep down the dust and says it work like a dream. Would also be great of course to be able to run a spray gun and have the air for cleaning up.

Up until the last few years ago we have paid through the neck for this stuff in Australia but the boom in Chinese manufacturing and web retailing has put a LOT of downward pressure on prices. Aldi supermarkets have also entered the Australian market over the last 10 years and often offer some good value for money equipment from time to time - they had air chisels on sales recently for about $15.

I'm on the side of using the hole saw or jig-saw (sawz-all will also work) over high-speed dust-creators. When you have to, you have to, but if there is any way around it, I'll go for the saw first.

I usually run a shop vac at the same time with any of this stuff if I possibly can,
