What is Listen Back Mode?

Was looking at the manual for a Horizon GX2200 AIS Radio. It mentions a "30 Watt PA/Loud Hailer with preprogrammed fog signals and listen back." They did not explain what listen back was. Am I interpreting it right that if you are using the hailer, the radio then listens for a similar sound and gives some kind of alert at the radio? :poke:

in PA mode, you key the mike and hail - when you release the mike key, the loudspeaker acts as a mike and listens for a response - any sound and plays it thru the radio - cold be another foghorn, or another boat answering your hail, engine noise, etc. no intelligence, though - it's just an amplifier. Keep in mind that all of these combo radios can't transmit or receive during the foghorn signal.

We use that on my research boats. Hailer has two speakers, one forward that we use for fog signaling, the other on the back deck to communicate with the science crew working the equipment. They can hear me and I can hear them. And right, you can't use the fog and PA functions at the same time. Have to go back to the manual horn when we're on station. It's is the stand alone hailer, not built into a radio but it works the same.

its a good feature to have when there is an urgent need to communicate with people on deck in rough windy conditions, especially when you are confined to a pilothouse.... and when listening for other fog signals

The fog signal function is great. Blow the horn every two minutes underway or ring the bell every one minute at anchor/aground. You can have that. I'd rather just push the button.

I just purchased the same radio. I have not installed it yet.
