I recieved this boat from my father. It has no hull ID. It is 26ft LOA. The gentleman who sold it to my father said it was a 1969 MacGregor 26. It needs work, but before asking questions about fixing things I wanted to know what to call it. It has a swing keel that I believe is made of lead. Thanks for your help!

Hull id #

Look in the upper right corner of the outside of the transom. There should be a series of letters and numbers impressed into the hull. This is the hull id number. Copy it down. Go to the website below and decipher the manufacturer, year built and other fun and useless information.

Mike ,that only works on boats built post 1973

prior to that it was on the makers name plate inside the boat somewhere. It (the name and other ID) might be on some old registration papers.

Scolil- This looks like a Balboa 20 to me. The mast has no spreaders that I can see. Check the length bow to stern. The Balboa I had has the ID# on the Starboard side of the transom where the deck mounts to the hull. Look close, it took me a while to locate mine. Rick

It has a state reg #

so it should have a name and ID on the registration document. Failing that, DMV should be able to pull up the info from the reg number.

Looks Like a Venture 21

but it should have spreaders if it is. Rick could be right since he had one. I have only known people who have had Venture 21's, but that was years ago. You might post on this site to see if anyone there knows.

Venture 26D maybe?

It looks like my V-21 except the cabin is sloped and mine isn't. I see the shrouds but not the spreaders but that could be because of the photo angle.

My Brother has Venture 17 which looks the same. Only way to know for sure is with a tape measure. The only thing that this boat sems to have is some sort of a traveler track for the jib. His doesn't.

Mac25

Heavy swing keel sounds like a Macgregor 25. The keel is iron instead on lead, with a trailor type winch to raise it. Post the picture on Macgregor owners site and you'll find out for sure, and find about a thousand fellow owners.

It looks like a MAC, but not a 25

A 25 would have 2 windows on each side, and also it would have the lifelines that go to the cockpit. It appears as though it doesn't have a poptop either, which makes me think that it is either smaller than a 25 or not a Macgreggor at all.I also say post this on the MAc sight to see what you get.Good luck.

Venture

One of the things that struck me about the Venture was the stern Main "Traveler" setup. It isn't really atreveler so much as a traingle shaped attachment for the lines. I'm not sure that they used these on other boats but this photo has that setup. I would look for some form of nameplate. Stern or inside of the cockpit stern. Another thing about the Venture was that it had one combination scupper that also was for the steel cable that lifts the keel. The winch was on a board above the hole. They may have done different on a larger boat than the 17.

The scupper keel cable hole combo is the same for my 1976 V-21 and so is the triangle sheeting system, which I'm about to replace.

Venture 24 or 25

1969 boats were 'venture' later renamed macgregor.in really good shape its worth maybe 4-5k. (more if lots of extras).the keel pivot bolt is a problem area, and a pita to fix...typically the hull id will be inside the boat, towards the rear bulkhead, with 'drilled numbers' (swiss cheese)(the later M25's had an innerliner)go to macgregor-boats.com on left are manuals...
