Just like in our holding tanks we want lots of oxygen for the good aerobic bacteria that digests waste with no odor. It is the anaerobic bacteria that produce all kinds of nasty smells. If you ever visit a sewage treatment plant you'll see fountains or waterfalls between treatment tanks, or sprinklers all designed to get oxygen into the waste water.
