H 260 Have Trailer Will Travel
I suppose I should be embarassed to ask but I'm too dumb to care:

On my 260, in the cockpit, in the port bench locker there's a two foot long piece of welded pipe with two loops on one end and a pin on a chain at the other. It's got it's own set of clamps that hold it there so it's obviously OEM but I confess that I don't have clue what it's for?

Can someone take pity on me and explain it?

Fred, don't worry about a question being too lame. There's no room for ego's when it comes to a simple answer to something easy. Everybody here had to figure it out sometime/somehow. Easy enough to just ask, whatever it is.

It's definitely the emergency tiller. Ck it out in the manual and maybe even make sure you know how it fits or what tools you should have in the boat to make it fit. I haven't heard of a steering failure on the 260's with a wheel but you might be the first(no, it'll probably be me).

Yes DO make sure it fits. My H376 emergency tiller was so heavily galvanized it could never have fitted into the hole in the tiller stock. I spent a busy hour filing the galvanizing away to make it fit.
Though I swept up afterwards, unfortunately I did not notice the zillion tiny steel filings on the cockpit seats and floor until every one went rusty and every one left a brown stain on my brand new boat.
