STill exploring a my new-to-me O'Day 322.....

This is on the starboard side of the V-berth....don't see any way to access it....is it just wasted space? Anyone cut an access door so you can use the space? There is a smaller one on the port side adjacent to the hanging locker (but not as big as this one...

The oday 322 I purchased had had an air conditioner unit in that space. It now has an access door I use to store my tool box.
It might have been an option when purchased new but I don't know for sure.

Thanks Gzito. The A/C idea is interesting. I had thought I would put the compressor out in the lazarette, but maybe that would be a good spot. I guess I should open it up and make sure it is not stuffed with money!

I cut an opening in both sides - port from the top and starboard from the side. I used the material I cut out to make doors. It gives quite a bit of extra storage.

Great.
I'm going to look into the port side. I never noticed that spot. If you have pic it would be great to see.

I'm up north at the moment but heading back to the boat in early August. I'll send some pics then. The cutouts I made were 8 inches high by 12 wide. I used a multitool because I wanted a nice clean cut (no drill holes) so I could reuse those sections as the access doors.
It was a very easy job and took less than an hour to do both.
I made the openings that size to suite tupperware type boxes that I got at the local dollar store.

Great Galley storage:
Under the stove there is a teak fiddle about 4 inches high. I cut it down 1 inch and this allowed me to slide 2 tray type tupperware containers 12 x 18 x 6 under the stove (the fiddle keeps it securely in place). I use them for beverage cans and wine bottles.

I also removed the door to the v-berth and made a curtain with 2 snaps. It makes the boat seem roomier (obviously just optics).

The more I crawl around and get into the bowels of this boat the more I'm impressed with the general build quality. I was concerned about the keel sump layup thickness but it's at least 3/4 inch on my boat (built pre Leveraged Buyout).

Don't forget that there is a grease nipple on your rudder post -

Hey VT
Funny you ask. Although I love my 322. I am looking for a cape dory 33. All I need to do is convince my wife which will be difficult.
If I find the boat I'm looking for I'll keep you in mind. If you haven't found one nearing the end of the season look me up.

I think that the problem is just in the later boats - I know the last two 322's were sold (one at the bankruptcy auction) and they both had keel sumps with a layup of 1/4 inch (I spoke with one of the owners).

I know that the owner contacted C. Raymond Hunt Design Group and that they certainly didn't spec a 1/4 inch layup.

I think there were about 200 322's built and mine is #35. In order to find out, I simply drilled a hole until I hit the top of the keel - keep in mind that my bilge is absolutely dry and no water came up the hole. It was over an inch before I hit the keel BUT, I know there is some 5200 (or something) between the hull and keel so I feel comfortable enough knowing I have at minimum 3/4 inch of layup.

I then shot 4200 into the hole and put a SS screw into it. The hole I drilled was 1/8 inch.

It may be possible to ascertain when the change occurred by the code in the Serial Number
Mine is STRSG035J687 So June of 87 and the 35th of the series. On my survey it says Bangor Punta Marine but that may just be a guess from the surveyor.

If other owners looked at the first section of the serial number "STRSG" that may be related to the builder and see when that changed (if it did).

When you said leveraged buyout, were you referring to the Pearson buyout? I have a 1990 Pearson Oday, with SN beginning POD...

I never looked at the Pearson side of the company but this was posted here in 2010:

One more legacy update...
Pearson (who had bought the O'Day/CAL molds and trademarks) went into bankruptcy in 1991
The Pearson molds and trademarks were then sold sold to Aqua Buoy Corporation.
Aqua Buoy went bankrupt before taking possession of the molds and moving them from the Portsmouth plant, which Grumman still owned.
Grumman reacquired the molds in the bankruptcy sale.
The Pearson and Cal molds and trademarks eventually were sold to a new company, formed in January 1996, called Cal-Pearson Corporation
The Cal-Pearson Corporation folded in 1998 after Bristol Yachts, who were were actually building their boats went bankrupt.
Apparently the only thing more expensive than owning a boat... Is building boats. BOAM? (Break Out Another Million)

The O'Day / Cal leveraged buyout preceeded the Pearson. If you go to google and search using this: "O'Day corporation bankruptcy" you can read
all about the leveraged buy out and the collusion with Meritor bank of Boston..
Interesting reading. Sad too how this company that made over 60,000 boats
could go belly up..

O'Day 322 Seattle, WA
Well, this post was inspirational. I just got my O'day 322 this spring and have been busy with little projects all summer. After seeing this post a few months back, I finally worked up the courage to cut a hole in the panel under the v-berth this week. Sure enough, this revealed a fairly large compartment that O'Day sealed off. Major score! I used a 15" x 15" louvered teak door from Whitecap. Thanks Tally, Gzito, & Tanq! This post needed pictures so here are a couple from my project.
