I see that the newer, larger Catalinas come with washer/dryers. This seems like a total waste to me, and classifies them for the floating condo category. If I'm going to be out for an extended time, I'd get one of those little hand-cranked washers.

Do Your Own Laundry, John?
<smile>. I have friends who are sailing their Catalina 47 to Alaska from Mexico (in fact, are there now) and will then be heading south and on to the Med. Anyhow, the deal with the spouse was: washer-dryer. "I am NOT going to drag the laundry out on every little dock to take to some dirty little laundromat". OK, so the deal is, you got the boat and a wife willing to put up with all the displacement for a dream cruise of several years duration, but you want her to do a few pounds at a time using a hand-cranked washer? Were I in the same position, and it being at all practical, you bet I'd put one in! Rick D.

The way I figure it, laundry on a boat in Mexico is not the same as at home. First, it would be mainly pretty light shirts, shorts, sandles, etc. Second, sure, I'd share in the task. But of course, if having a washing machine aboard was important to my wife then a washing machine we would have.

End of the Good Old Boat Era
I could swing the purchase of a bigger boat, but abhor the risk associated with cost of ownership. When these floating condos grow old, maintaining two heads, hot and cold water systems, dish and clothes washers and more will be very expensive. I will always find the simpler boat more attractive. The harbor has laundry and showers.
While I am fine with simple, we come in all kinds: last weekend I was amused to see a woman taking multiple bags of dry cleaned clothes to her boat on the courtesy shuttle. I asked her, "do you have your husband's tux in there", she replied, "that was last weekend". I would rather be dirty than dapper, give me a beer, allow me to burp.
