What is biggest water you've been in with Lancer 25 or like sailboat.

I have a Lancer 25 near Portland, OR. I would like to sail her up to the San Juan Islands by going up the Washington coast. If anyone has coastal experience with this boat or one like it and has info for me, I'd really like to hear from you. Will a Lancer 25 sail coastal safely? Went on the Lancer site but no answer.

I've taken 500-miles coastal trips on a much more tender boat, with a child for crew. It was fun.

We sail our Lancer 25 on the Atlantic. So far no problems.

We're not talking the Atlantic here, we're talking the Oregon (and Washington) Coast: some of the NASTIEST stuff in the northern hemisphere. Also, there's a lot of LONG runs with no real harbours. You will need to be prepared to stay offshore for days at a time, and run full days under power when the wind dies. Also realize you're going AGAINST the prevailing NW wind, so be prepared for a lot of beating.

That said, it's been done in smaller boats than that - I knew a guy that started down in a C&C 24 singlehanded, and he only turned back because he couldn't sleep and after 2-3 days he had had enough. I'd probably do it in a Cal 25 if I had the time, and certainly my Crown 28 would be up for the challenge.

I have been from Marina del Rey, CA to Catalina Island, about 30 nm, with my 25' Lancer and winds above 15 knots without any problems. The boat sails just fine on main alone in higher wind speeds. Also, I have a 110 jib as well as a 150 genoa and a storm sail, which I have never had to use. I was able to surf the boat with winds above 10 knots. And power sail at more than 6 knots. Just don't have to much weight at the rear of the boat.

but marina del rey to catalina isnt bashing uphill , as is the bash off the coast of oregon and wash wil be--very wet.did from lost angeles harbor to marina del rey in a cal24--actually was a 1958 jensen - wenk 24---i will NEVER again do that. is the wettest most uncomfortable sailing i have ever done. it was worse than sailing thru lightning storms in florida. i would sail the jensen - wenk in a ny minute--but i will never again go north on the west coast in a small boat. never never never. maybe for a coupla million dollars. but they pay first.......


yes--jensen - wenk is a fiberglass boat.

We have friends with a Catalina 25 that trailer from CA to Wash and cruise the San Juans for weeks at a time. They loved it and plan on doing it again. Have you thought about trailering up and then crusing?

Thanks for all the responses. I think I'll take a pass and try to find a trailer to take it to Olympia, WA and sail up to the islands through Puget sound. I've done that before with a Columbia 26 which is a great small sailer. I'm getting too old to take the chances I would have taken when I was younger

I have been the same sail several times in my 25' Lancer and had a ball. I have also made the same sail with my 22' Venture and my 24' Windrose, even in small craft warnings. All with no bad results. It's all in how the boat is set up and the amount of sail you have in different weather conditions.

Yep, but:

Southern CA is a very different sailing area than most of the coast to the north of Point Conception. Because of the point, and the Channel Islands, the waves are filtered and tend to be smaller in SoCal than they are further north. I am pretty sure that Druid's comments apply to most of the coast from Pt. C north, though I only have experience with the SoCal portion.

On a good day, with a good weather window (i.e., most days), almost any boat can do a SoCal port to Catalina. I have done it in boats from 19' to 36'. Santa Ana winds and post frontal westerlies are a different matter. With a proper weather forecast and a seaman-like plan, I would take my Catalina 22 to Catalina, starting in any harbor from Marina Del Rey to Dana Point (if I just had the time to trailer to CA...). Even start from Santa Barbara or San Diego if I had the right crew and the weather was really right.

No way I would try the OP's asked about sail in my boat - but the Lancer is a bigger craft. Still - Take Druid very seriously - and the OP thinking about trailering is probably a wise decision.
