I have a small exposed rubber part in my cockpit, exposed to weather and sun. What is the best rubber preservative? It needs to be non-sticky as the part covers a much used switch.

I'd second 303 Aerospace Protectant, which is quite good. Do not confuse it for the similarly named 303 High-tech Fabric Guard, which does little good for plastics....and is meant for restoring water repellency to fabrics.

I posted this just last week, and yes, make sure its the aerospace product. Its like "suntan lotion" for plastic, rubber, vinyl, etc. Works great. Will protect dingys from sun damage, keep clear plastic windows or panels in biminis and dodgers from yellowing, keep your yellow shore power cord clean and not sticky, etc., etc. It does work.

303

I used 303 on my PVC dinghy and yet it still broke down from the UV-abc rays and went gluey, still serviceable but the surface has started to deteriorate after just a few years. I sponged that 303 on liberally every summer and only had the dinghy exposed two months max per year.
I do use that Simonize Black shine tire protectant on my rub rails though (every year) and they are holding up just fine so I think I'll try it on the rubber boot that the throttle cables pass through. It is a bit messy though and does leave a residue for a while but it seems to be working well on my rub rail, thank goodness.

The "went gluey" has nothing to do with 303 Aerospace and everything to do with a defect in the material. Every now and then Zodiac and others get caugth with a bad batch of PVC. The floor and tubes of my Cadet Fastroller went sticky in a season and a half, in MAINE. Sadly it took me two years to get Zodiac to honor their own warranty. They finally did and replaced the hull and floor..

Simoniz Black back or Black Ice are nearly all silicone with NO UV inhibitors. The are dressings only.. Silicone is bad stuff..
