I found this canvas covered Dingy hanging in a barn for over 25 years and who knows how old it is. There is no registration numbers on the hull. It is made like a canoe and I think it is a Penn Yan it is 8 ft in length and the canvas covering has cracks in the painted surface. Besides being hard to find anymore do they have much value? I want to be fair with the owner as he has no idea the worth either. Any one have any ideas? I would like to use it as a tender a few times a year. Chuck R.

Dinghy Book Case
I'd like to get my hands on an old wooden dinghy, about six feet high, and it doesn't even have to float, I want to make a nautical bookcase from it.

Careful
Its difficult to use a wooden boat "a few times a year". If you keep the boat out of the water, the planking shrinks as it dries, opening up gaps. It takes awhile (hours to days, depending on the wood, age, water temp, etc.) for the planking to saturate and expand to its full size, closing up the gaps. In short, you have to keep the boat in the water most of the time to make sure you don't have to continuously bail.

He obviously doesn't have to worry about the shrinking as this is a canvas covered boat. Basically a frame with canvas stretched and painted over it. The phenomenon to which you refer can be a problem with edge planked boats and to a certain extent on lapstrake boats, but should pose no problem with a canvas covered boat ellis

Canvas covered?
Ellis: I was under the impression that this was a planked boat with a canvas cover over the outside of the hull. The photos posted by chuck seem to show this (the interior of the hull between the ribs has been painted or stained the same color as the ribs; in the second photo, you can make out the lines of what looks like planks). If the hull is covered with painted canvas, I would think that might slow the ingress of any water. However, given the age and condition of the paint and canvas, I wouldn't count on it being a cureall.
