What is a "Fractional Rig"?

4/5ths

It means the forestay only goes up 4/5th of the mast instead of all the way to the top. This is important on Hunters because the roach main is so big that a tradtional jib would be overpowering, or so I'm told. It may also have something to do with the aspect ratio, but I'm out of my depth.

And Another Thing

I know the main should be trimmed out some more. OK, OK already. It looked good at the time... *o Rick D.

Got it!

Ok, so now I know what it is and what it looks like. Do all 25.5 have a fractional rig?

Fractional

A fractional rig is any rig where the forestay doesn't attach at the very top of the masthead. They can be 4/5ths, 3/4ths, 7/8ths, etc. If the forestay attaches to the masthead, obviously then it's called a masthead rig. An important point to note is that not all fractional rigs on Hunters are B&R rigs, which is another discussion altogether.

Is this the same as your boat? Looks like a masthead rig from the photo. RD

Ah, Rick, hate to mention this but,

I've never read a post by Alan with a sailing error. Shh. Don't say anything, he might be listening. Wouldn't want his head getting too big. *x

14 Posts and No Answer for "PhotoEd" !

You guys did a good job of answering what a fractional rig was but the poor guy still hasn't got an answer to his question! i.e., "I'll try again: Do all 25.5 have a fractional rig?" Although I'm not familiar with 25.5s I did some research. There is a picture of a boat that has "25.5" on the sail that is a masthead rig. Posted picture: http://www.sailboatowners.com/classified/photo.tpl?dadno=73071253492.0&brsku=73214832666&fno=0&bd=[bd]&p1=[p1]&p2=[p2]&xs=[xs]&l1=[l1]&l2=[l2]&active=T&sb=[sb]&dr=[dr]&ad=%5Bad%5D Specs page: http://www.sailboatowners.com/boats/model.tpl?sku=30179116948414&fno=0&bts=T PhotoEd: this happens here sometimes - we can get a little distracted. The above is no "guarentee" that ALL 25.5s are masthead rigged - the wrong numbers could have been put on the sail, for instence. But, it is *probably* safe to say that the picture posting is correct and if so, since I don't know of any case where Hunter has made a rig change during the course of a model, that 25.5s are masthead rigs. If anyone has something to the contrary I'm sure they will post a nice correction. hope this helps Ed

OK, I've gotta ask...

....I don't know if you guys are just having fun with me OR am I coming across as a pain in the ass? John, I was just pulling your chain, I didn't mean to sound like a "knowitall". I truly enjoy reading and posting to this site. I try to help where I can and pick up a few pointers along the way. I do have more than a few years of sailing and racing under the keel!

Thanks Ya'll

Looked at the boat on Saturday, I think I like what I see. I'll post a couple of follow-up questions in the right area.
