How would I get out? The bay here ices over sometimes and what if I am out at mooring and this happens? How will effect my h23? can I break through it and keep sailing? or will I be stuck? Also what does this do to my outboard? will it still push me through the ice or do i need bigger than a 8hp? thanks Sammy Smarty H23

Good Questions

But I gotta ask, if the bay freezes and the boat is at a mooring, how are you going to get to it? If you can walk across the ice, I would not recommend trying to sail, or motor, through it. If you can row out through the ice, you can probably sail or motor through it, too. But I gotta ask, why? We feel your pain, but pull the boat and take piano lessons or something. Spring will be here 'fore you know it.

Ice is tough on gelcoat

I would think the thinice would be rough on your gelcoat.

are you for real?

I lived in upstate ny for 21 years right near the bay in ontario, you can drive a full dump truck of stone across in the winter!!! that how they get alot of the stuff to the islands!!! This will ruin your boat and no way in hell can you sail or motor across it unless your a coasty ice breaker!!

For Real , ,

I was thinking someone was pulling our chains .Perhaps not , anyhow I can see daylight thru my hull of a sunny day so I dont think it would be moving much ice . One time I was sitting on the bow drinking a coca cola and some ice cubes spilled out of my drink and the boat moved it alright Mike

water depth is critical

make sure your mooring depth is less than your mast height - that way, the boat will be easier to find in the spring

Not blocarting!

I was thinking I might be able to break the ice up and sail or at least break it with the motor to get out to the great lake ontario! It was my hope, first winter up here and I was a little pondered about why i was the only boat left on the balls? Hmmm, I guess I might have to do some more research unless anyone else has some good ideas? Maybe I could take it out and put it in the trailer and sail on the ice on the trailer!?!?!? think it might work? or leave it in? I really love sailing and i dont really want to stop, I wouldnt havemoved up here if I relized I had too from FL. hmm

Well Sammy,

I'd have to say that your observation that all the other boats are on the hard is probably the good Lord trying to take care of you. I have found that little voice in my head to be a great source of information when I listen to it.

This is great!

If this dosn't liven up the forums, nothing will! Sammy, I too, have thought of leaving my boat in the water all year. After all, the lake is only really frozen Feb-Apr. Fortunatily, the good state of PA. has said it is best to get your boat out earlier. It also says, wear seat belts, I do. They suggest I dont talk on cell phone and drive, I try not to. Don't drink and drive, well---- Sammy, get your boat out, so we can hear from you again!
