What hunter to take?

The cockpit size should be self-evident. The crew is the limiting factor, not the boat. This is one of those questions that always makes me expect an upcoming distress call to the CG.
Depends on how agile your passengers are. If they are able to sit on the side of the boat then it leaves more for the cockpit. If all 8 must be in the cockpit then I would go big. We have a 36 and it gets cramped with 8 but it can be done.

I would go at least 36 but 38 and 41 would be better,I have a 07 H-36 and 6 no problem on a long trip and day sailing 8 is doable also.
I sailed my 36 from Montauk,NY to Florida all offshore and plenty room for the 4 crew we had and the 36 has OK room for 8 in cockpit but 8 sleeping down below or eating will be tight.
How long of a trip are you planning and will you be stopping in marina's along the way, 8 will need big water tank if showing on boat so if you can I would get a 41.
If wanting to save $$$$$ 36 is a good size boat to make the trip it just depends on how freindly every one is,my 07 36 has lots of storage and very big cockpit storage compartant on port side cockpit table is nice size,really depends how much time on water and in a anchorage or marina,36 will hold 8 and a good offshore boat too and easy to handle especially if getting In-mast.
What year boats are you looking at.

Well I'm 14 and have started sailing 23 foot sonars. My two friends who are both incredible sailers would be the crew. Now my friends mom who is thought of sailing to Marthas vineyard is coming and as a skipper my dad. That's 5 people. Also what about a water tank? The longest I've sailed is a mile so I'm not sure how thirsty I'll be.
I have sailed on the H38, the H44, and the H46. None of those boats would seat eight comfortably in the cockpit. We had six on the H46 and that was very comfortable. It was also a three cabin boat which was great for three couples. The water tanks are adequate but most people put a couple of cases of bottled water on the boat.

How long are you planning to stay out on the boat and what is choices do you have from a charter company.
Bigger would be better for family trip with more cabins and maybe 2 heads,my wife and I fine my H-36 plenty room and when I have gone cruising with all guy crew we need less room for sure.
But your family vacation would do better with bigger,you will not always be in the cockpit sailing along and will need room for cooking breakfast,lunch and dinner down below and sleeping for 8 in my H-36 won't work for sure.
Went on a charter with 6 and captain and cook on a 46 cat and now that was a real roomy boat and we all had our own room and head and plenty of room in cockpit and in cabin for sure.

Here is one Boston charter company as an example: http://www.bostonsailingcenter.com/charters/bostoncharters.asp . Do you have a qualified skipper among your family and friends? If not then you will have to charter the boat with a captain. Either way a big boat is pricey. Not sure about 2011 but a captain used to get at least $150. per day. Some companies will not permit "bareboat" charters. This is where you supply your own qualified captain. You will have to Google and then call the companies. In the link above I see no mention of "bareboat".
Can't tell you how long. I had sailed for years, mostly single-hand, and including offshore. Still my resume' wasn't great compared to a lot of guys here on SBO. At minimum, if you or your father don't already have the experience, take a course from the Power Squadron or Coast Guard Auxiliary on coastal navigation. If you don't know how to navigate, read charts, etc. you don't want to try to sail to the Vineyard in anything. I would also not do it without some solid experience offshore, with an instructor, captain, etc. A daysailer on the Charles won't give you that.
