What hose should I use for a sink drain?

Here's a common application ...

It is a mesh reinforced plastic tube. Concerning the single hose clamps, I close the sea cock all the time except when using the sink, so inspection is pretty regular. I just don't worry about it. The hose would probably stay in place without episode even without hose clamps.

Probably because they make more money on the other stuff Joe!
I've used the reinforced tygon tubing for a couple of decades now with no failures. Sanitation hose is good stuff for it's intended use, the movement of waste and not allowing odors to penetrate.
That's my experience also.... and the guy at WM recommended it years ago..

but my question was ...WHY?....... why is it not recommended for under the waterline use..... all the verbage from Shannon 28 and still no explanation of what the rating is based on.. in the West Marine chart he just posted it rates series 162 "excellent" the highest rating... three dots... for "Drain Line Below Waterline" applications.

Regarding RichH's comment about all through hull hoses needing wire reinforcement....... here's another quote from the same WM article
"Drain hoses
Drainage hose for cockpit, sink or shower, needs to be flexible with strong walls and resistance against kinks and abrasions, but since they are under positive pressure, they may not have a helical wire.
So... who could have predicted this subject to generate so much discussion... not me.

I went all day not worrying about my tygon tubing:D. Now, if I could just find a piece of white tyvek without buying a $100 roll.....

1. From the chart you provided, drain line below water line is rated good while toilet water inlet is rated excellent. Can't see any major difference in basic function as both are below the waterline.
Maybe one is rated on non-permeablity of odor and the other is rated on resistance to puncture, burst or whatever else the criteria for below waterline use is. There are head installations that have no thru-hull at all. The manufacturer doesn't know the installation specifics.
I am sorry to extend this thread - if the weather doesn't improve soon I will go out of my mind. I might already have already.

Ward H, on my Oday 22 that thru hull is just above the waterline.
To show how this type of discussion can be GREAT; mine does not have a shut off. I got to thinking, 'what if' something happened, the hose came off, and for some reason that 'hole in the hull' got below the waterline! Me thinks I will put a shut off there as well at the bilge drain thru hull which is also just above the waterline!
Thanks for the discussion!
Jack
