What holds rudder up.

Steering arm sits on top of Rudder packing gland causing excessive tightening of gland. Packing gland is a cone to conical gland with 3 bolts to adjust tension of packing. The steering arm is sitting on top of the gland. What should be holding rudder post up to keep the arm off of the gland? Removing the steering arm and loosening the packing gland allowed the rudder to be removed. Did not have to disconnect or remove anything else. Shouldn't something else be holding up the rudder post??

On most boats..

On most boats there is certainly more to it. In the water, however, the foam core holds the rudder up relieving some pressure when idle but under sail it's sounds like you could be putting a ton of load on that gland? Can you post a photo??

There was no packing gland on the rudder tube becasue it comes all the way up through the deck aft of the cockpit. I replaced the upper and lower bushings a few years back and I think the only thing holding that rudder on was the clamp for the tiller and the bottom gudgeon. http://treilley.myphotoalbum.com/view_album.php?set_albumName=album19 Tim R.

Thrust bearing

Just like Tim's description of the Pearson configuration, most rudders with tillers are just supported with a bushing or thrust bearing under the tiller head ---- the shaft and rudder 'hangs free' and the only mechanism that prevents the rudder from falling off (down the tube) is the strength and size of the tiller head (usually arranged with a 'cross-bolt'). If your rudder packing gland is causing too much friction, changing the typical flax packing to Gore-tex .... "GFO" braided all-teflon packing will radically improve the frictional characteristics, as teflon has the lowest coefficient of friction of any 'solid'. For best frictional characteristics you may also need to 'polish' the shaft where the GFO comes in contact. http://www.stuffingboxpacking.com/ as one example of suppliers of GFO .... there are now many suppliers and distributors of GFO
