I'm new to sailing and I don't understand how the mainsail is connected to the mast. It almost looks like there are supposed to be some type of sliding connectors that fit in the groove on the mast. But there isn't any on my mast.

There are sail lugs( I believe they are called). They're attached every foot to two feet along the sail and they slide in a slot in the mast.

Calypso is correct. I would also recomend that you buy a can of McLube sailkote and lubricate the track with it while you have your mast down. This helps reduce friction in the track.

If your mast is up, just lube the slugs before hoisting the sail. It really helps the lowering of the mainsail. I do it before hoisting the mainsail every sail.

I am having trouble reefing my sail because of the lugs. I cant get the metal ring at the reef points over the hook on the boom, due to the lugs stacking up in the mast groove. Any insight?

Sounds odd. Got a photo? My boat is rigged for single line reefing, plus there are short lengths of webbing with a D-ring on either side through the reefing points. You could easily whip up a pair, or have a sailmaker do so. From what I understand they allow you to hook onto both reefing horns, rather than just one, but in your case they would give you the slack you may need to hook on.

Ah...just noted that you are on passage...in a pinch a short line with a couple of bowlines in it will serve also.

Yes Bob, we just lash it down with a short piece of line. It would be nice to figure out something quicker and more streamlined however. Best case it takes the lashing, tying another bowline at the other end of the foot, stretching the sail out, and tying all the reef lines in, plus handling the main halyard, and adjusting the sheet and boom vang. Takes a long time.

Just make a permanent one. Leave the short length of line in the reef point with the bowlines on either side. You can adjust them at your leisure to suit length-wise. Then when you need to reef you can slip them over the horns and then tension with the main halyard.

Pawtuckaway NH?

Lake Pawtuckaway in Nottingham? I had a friend who's family has homes on the Lake. We used to go up all the time in the early 90's. Unfortunately he died in a snowmobiling accident on the Lake. His name was Brian Hall.

I dont remember the snowmobiling death, but it is a very small town and Im sure some of the people I know that live on the lake in winter remember it. Pawtuckaway is a nice little spot.

I am yet to find a competent rigger on this trip. I will have to learn it all myself I guess. Just assumed that rigging shops would know something about sailing, but any advancements over standard sloop rigging are unknown to the people I have spoken with.
