This winter our timing has been seriously wrong. Our sailboat is three hours away in Panama City Florida. All winter every time we go down to the boat it is rainy and cold. We just have not caught a break. The seas have been 6 to 8 foot every time we are down. This weekend we are staying home to do a Superbowl cookout with some friends. I just had to go and look at NOAA knowing the air temps are going to be in the 80s..... What gives? It is like the planet is taunting us!

TODAY
EAST WIND 5 TO 10 KNOTS. SEAS 1 TO 2 FEET. DOMINANT
PERIOD 3 SECONDS. PROTECTED WATERS SMOOTH TO A LIGHT CHOP.

TONIGHT
EAST WIND 5 TO 10 KNOTS. SEAS 1 FOOT OR LESS. DOMINANT
PERIOD 3 SECONDS. PROTECTED WATERS SMOOTH. AREAS OF DENSE FOG
NEAR SHORE AFTER MIDNIGHT.

SATURDAY
SOUTHEAST WIND 5 TO 10 KNOTS. SEAS 1 TO 2 FEET.
DOMINANT PERIOD 3 SECONDS. PROTECTED WATERS SMOOTH TO A LIGHT CHOP.
AREAS OF DENSE FOG IN THE MORNING. A SLIGHT CHANCE OF SHOWERS
THROUGH THE DAY.

SATURDAY NIGHT
SOUTH WIND 5 TO 10 KNOTS. SEAS 1 TO 2 FEET.
DOMINANT PERIOD 4 SECONDS. PROTECTED WATERS SMOOTH. AREAS OF DENSE
FOG NEAR SHORE. A SLIGHT CHANCE OF SHOWERS.

SUNDAY
SOUTH WIND AROUND 10 KNOTS. SEAS 1 TO 2 FEET. DOMINANT
PERIOD 4 SECONDS. PROTECTED WATERS SMOOTH TO A LIGHT CHOP. AREAS OF
DENSE FOG IN THE MORNING. A SLIGHT CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS.
I hope everyone else has had a better time this winter with sailing.

Winter

It is winter here in Florida and the weather all over the place and we had to cancel a weekend cruise last week and it never fails to be too windy or too cold when we make plans.
We get this nice weather to go day sailing but as soon as we plan a group cruise
in comes the bad weather, hopefully we will get better weather the rest of the winter, could be worst if up north.

At least years like this are the exception rather than the rule. Think of your boat as a seaside winter cabin and just get away.

I'm beginning to wonder the same thing here. When i have the opportunity, weather or tides aren't favorable. The tides have been so low lately, i may not be able to get out, or back into my marina. Low tide has been late afternoon, right after work- ideal time for me.

I just made a sacrifice to make Poseidon happy. Bought two 29 marine Duracell Penn batteries from Sam's. My old ones were six years old and starting to fade.

I like Benny's comment that your boat is your cabin on the water. There was a time when my boat was 90 minutes away and I would make the trip every weekend regardless of weather. If it was lousy, I would find stuff to do on land. At least I was on the boat. I joined the local yacht club and found there was always fun at the club house in lousy weather.

After about 3 weeks of cold, rain, sleet (!), or low tides, I finally got out yesterday. 10 knot steady breeze, temp in the mid-60's, sunshine... ahh, priceless.

I sure feel sorry for you as I watch the bubbler under our boats fighting to keep the ice at bay.

Sounds like a great Maine day to sail! Just add fog as thick as peanut butter, drop the temps by 20 degrees and throw in a few thousnd lobster bouys, just to make it interesting. Don't forget the hull-crushing ledges, 13 foot tides, and 400 plus island within 30 miles of each other. (Now I'm just trying to make you jealous)

We've found that listening to NOAA is just about a waste of time. They might get lucky once in a while but The Weather Channel usually nails it. I know, that's incindiary. But our experience supports it. NOAA is fine for approaching mega-storms, current weather or maybe a few hours out. That's where they start loosing it. Now, there's an old addage; "If you don't like Maine weather, wait a minute." Maybe that's why. I don't know.

hello all

wow... tides, 60's temp, sunny...... I wish... -20 degrees here, lake frozen over with 6 inches of ice, boat in driveway, covered in tarp with 5 inches of snow on top of tarp.... all my sailboat project material is sitting in the dinning room on the table or floor waiting for warm weather again... I am having sailing withdrawls right now...

sincerely

Don't mean to add insult or injury, but it was great on St. Andrew Bay today. I wish you could have been here.

I bet it was. I am glad someone got out and enjoyed it. I ripped up 15 year old burber carpet and replaced it with Oak laminate flooring.
