Hi folks, Jack again, I just went out and took a phot of the end of the mast and tabernacle. Is the mast designed to just sit there on the taberbnacle with the pin in it? After looking at the end of the mast I found it thicker than I thought. Thanks in advance! Will post the mast end first, then the tabernacle. Jack

Old Style Mast Tabernacle
Hi Jack; It looks as if the mast is meant to get inserted in to the tabernacle in the lowered position from aft and then tilted up while the pin through the mast was braced in the slot cut into the backside of the tabernacle. The mast shrouds (fore stay, port and starboard upper and lower shrouds and the back stay) will hold the mast in place against the base of the tabernacle. It's a fairly common system found in older, smaller boats like CD Typhoons and the like. Looks like you might want to re-bed that tabernacle and address those rusted bolts before you put any load on it. Good Luck, Stu

Mast Tabernacle
I didn't know exactly what you had Jack, but my friend Wayne has a similar set-up on his Seaward 22 and I don't think that he has any kind of a plug in the bottom of his mast. I don't think that anything goes into it with that style of Tabernackal. If there are no screw holes near the bottom of the mast, chances are it's supposed to be open.

My mast is set up in exactly the same way with a similar pin through the base and open on the bottom. I have a 1974 Sundance Weekender 20' and the mast is by Dwyer. Hope that helps.

Looks fine
Looking at the pictures I can see that there is a little nub (for want of a better name?) on the bottom of the tabernacle that will retstrain the mast foot and prevent it from sliding aft out of the slots once the mast is up. The pressure exerted on the mast as you raise it up pushes the mast forward in the slots so it can't come out while stepping. Same goes for when unstepping. The mast on our old CAL 21 looked the same, no plug or cover for the mast foot, and she had a similar tabernacle.

I can vouch for the fact that as you lower or raise the mast you need to watch the position of the mast base in the tabernacle because it will move a bit until the stays are tight enough to hold it in place. Mine does try to walk a bit and if I am not careful I think it would slide out of the tabernacle on its way up or down.
