Strictly Cruising

My O'day 26 is used strictly for lake cruising as I have loose wheel steering due to worn linkage, an inboard diesel connected to a two-bladed prop, the OEM main and jib just recently re-furbished by Sail Care and a new CDI 135% genoa - and a new bimini.

Addendum to Strictly Cruising

I wanted to add that cruising is also by choice and not by the fact that by boat is not set up for racing. I got tired of the cussin' and screamin' over 30 years ago. Oh, I wouldn't mind a match race against my slip-mate who has a twin of my boat except he has an outboard and tiller-steering and a 150% "old" genoa. I learned sailing basics on the equivalent of a Sunfish over 40 years ago; bought my first boat, a Chrysler Lone Star 16 sloop right out of college which I really enjoyed sailing more than my present O'Day 26 - once I got it out onto open water but had to sell when the kids came along. When the kids got big enough to "go sailing with Dad," I bought a Hobie 14 on which I did my only "blue water" sailing in the Gulf of Mexico but had to sell it when the kids got more interested in school-sponsored athletics. But now that I'm close to retirement, I have a boat on which I can sleep, cook, get in out of bad weather and has fresh water and a marine head in addition to an AM/FM/CD stereo and laptop computer w/DVD. What else offers all this and an activity to clear all the cobwebs in your head? What a life!

A Little Bit of Everything

I started out on an Oday 16, moved up to a Venture 22 and am anxiously awaiting sailing this summer on my new to me Ericson 29. So far I have only day sailed with one overnight in the Venture with my daughter. While cramped we had a wonderful time. It was on the fourth of July so after a great sail and then sitting on deck and watching the fireworks we went below for the night. One of the best times I have had with my daughter yet. With the bigger boat I am looking forward to longer sails and more overnights. Would like to head down to Cape Cod and the Isle of Shoals as well as many of the islands in Casco Bay. I am interested in trying my hand at racing, there would seem to be a thrill in trying to get the best out of my boat. Towards that I am looking at participating in the MS Regatta this year. Then later I hope to experience an overnight passage. In the immortal words of River Rat, "There is nothing as much worth doing as simply messing about in boats". I love every aspect of boating, even working on them, and want to experience it all.

A little of each please...

My wife and I do a little of each, Racing, Daysailing, and Cruising. Our Hunter 31 is not really set up for racing so we limit it to our small yacht clubs Friday night series (more like beer buddy softball than MBA games). Fridays she doesn't want to go, I hop on a buddies boat and round the marks with him. More often it's the 3-4 hour day sail out and around the Magothy River or Annapolis area, depending on which way the wind is blowing. Cruising has been limited so far to single overnighters, more as a get away from home than a 100 mile day, and destination is more dependant on wind direction than pre-planned voyages. Once a year we charter a big cat out of the BVI, take some of our college age and older kids and/ friends and spend a week or more dreaming about chucking it all and cruising the Carib full time.

Hackin' and Bangin'

I learned to sail many years ago(1975) with the aide of fellow sailors. I have owned 7 trailerable sailboats, some in slips and some on the side of my home. Presently I have a Hunter 23. I have trailered her to Southern California a few times and launched for a week of fun on Catalina Island. Mostly I sail Lake Mead in a crusing mode. A few years back, I began racing with the Nevada Yacht Club and my skill level expanded exponentially. What I thought was sailing before was truely hacking and banging across the water. Racing has made me a better cruiser and attentive to details I had no idea about. I sometimes charter large boats for Coastal crusies off California. I look forward to the day of a 42-46 foot Hunter and an anchor in the sand off Tahiti.
