I can imagine how spooky it would feel to be the only person standing on that conning tower and have somebody close the hatch on you.

If the weather was really bad, like white water coming over the top of the sail, they would close the lower hatch to keep water from getting in the "people tank". If you had your binoculars to your eyes and you saw a white flash you'd better duck behind the coming really quickly or you'd get a black eye. If it was blue water you'd better hold your breath and pray the diving officer didn't lose depth control and kept you on the surface until the wave passed. Happened only once to me. You learn quickly on the white flash and get briefed on the blue water. Normally we wouldn't be on the surface though if the weather was that bad.

By the way. They pic jackdaw posted is correct for the structurs. The retractable things that stick up are the periscopes or masts (radar, ECM, etc)
