Are you looking at an Alerion 28 for your 1st boat? That's basically a very expensive day-sailer. I don't think it is really set-up to be a comfortable boat for cruising, what with the very low headroom in the cabin. I think they made that boat specifically for day-sailing performance and beauty, with the emphasis on features above deck, not below. Don't get me wrong, it is very nicely appointed below-decks, but they consider the comfort and space below decks to be secondary to the sailing characteristics and aesthetics of the boat.

The jib boom is intended to make the jib self-tacking ... just steer the boat upwind from side to side and let the sails switch sides without having to adjust any sheets. Tartan also utilizes this feature on their boats ... but it can only be used with non-overlapping head sails.

#Scott, I find myself looking at everything sail capable that floats, it's a learning experience for me. I will be joining a yatch club to get exposure as soon as I finish my training, which will be in about a month. I think this will give me experience and exposure to different boat sizes. I would like to have at least a 28' boat as a first boat so that I don't outgrow it quickly.

I can only compare how it to King Air. Perfect, stable, honest, comfortable, strong, and very well built.

I like the concept of a self tender like that, but the ones I've been on made it difficult to move about the foredeck, back and forth. I sure wouldn't let it stop me from buying it though. It IS nice to just swing 'er around without the mad sheet dash..

Lots of video of this self-tacking Hoyt jib boom system on the W.D. Schock website. The system is standard on the Harbor 30 and Harbor 25. Perhaps on the Harbor 20 as well.

That is a self tending modern rendition of the club foot jib boom designed by Garry Hoyt. The boat in question was designed by the late Carl Schumacher and it is a traditional-looking vessel with a modern rig and underbody (keel). So, it has a lot of character yet can sail exceptionally well.

Because if you are standing on the deck when you come about, you will either get your ankle crushed or get knocked off the boat.

There are other self tending jib set ups that don't require a boom footed jib. They have a track on the deck and a traveler that can allow the sheet to change sides when you tack. I'd like to set my boat up that way... you only have one jib sheet and that cleans things up a lot.
