What does sail number represent

I have a 25 foot O'Day with Hull ID of XDTG0389M76H. I believe the main sail is the original and it has the number 3 on it.

I'm trying to determine if that number has any special meaning ... as in 3rd built that year.

Can anyone help me determine information on my boat based on the Hull ID?

XDTG0389M76H should be "XDYG0389M76H"

Translation:
XDY = MIC (Manufacturers ID Code) for O'DAY
G = 25
0389 = Class# (your boat was the 389th O'Day 25 built)
M76 = 1976 Model Year
H = month of manufacture (March 1976)

Look to see if you can see a shadow on the mainsail where the "8" and "9" fell off? I think in those days O'DAY was having the Class# displayed on the sails, so your original sails would have had "389" on them.
It is also possible that your boat was part of a rental fleet and was boat# 3 of their fleet??

I have my origional O'Day mainsail. It has a big blue "O" in it, and a simple "22" beneath it.

A PO had his NYS registration number on the sail instead of his hull number. When I had a new mainsail made, I put my hull number on it.
