I guess the type of use may dictate the location of the radio. I for one have the fixed mount 25 watt VHF radio located inside the cabin, next to the companion way steps. It is adequately located to send out an emergency signal if the situation required it but it is out of reach from the helm where it may be needed to communicate to shore or other boats while underway. I usually keep a handheld unit in the cockpit for that purpose. I'm considering whether locating a 2nd fixed mount radio in the cockpit or installing a 2nd antenna in the stern rail and connecting the coax cable to the portable radio. This 3' antenna would be located atop a 5' pvc pipe for an effective antenna height of around 12' from the waterline. I'm inclining to go with the second option as I never try to establish communication with a vessel or shore I cannot see with my eyes. All I really need is to extend the range of the handheld a little so that I do not have to get up from the helm to use the fixed mount radio. I know there are automatic antenna splitters and wifi speaker/michrophones but I really like to keep things simple. Repositioning the current radio would live an ugly hole in the woodwork and require splicing and re-routing coaxial cable. I have found an adapter to install the coax cable to the handheld and this way I would keep the cable coiled in the stern rail ready to connect the handheld and have enough cable to move it around. I do have a 2nd handheld 2 watt power that I can take with me to the bow of the boat if need be. I was talking to a communications expert and he indicated the reason that VHF power was capped at 25 watts was that the signal was line of sight and the attainable range for reliable communications was mostly dictated by the height of the antenna and any excess power would be wasted. He also indicated this is the reason why handhelds were limited to 5 watts as having an antenna of only around 4' to 5' high besides trying not to fry your brains out. Although cost is not a major consideration it just so happens that choice I'm inclend for comes in at around $40 vs perhaps $200 for a new fixed mount. I plan to get started in the project this week so if anyone has any better or different ideas your comments will be appreciated. Anyways I figure this may give us a topic to chew around a little.
