Im interested in buying a 1986 catalina sailboat. The gal that owned it is offering an 8 hp johnson O/B, and dingy with its purchace. She wants 4,000 obo for a boat which appears to be in good condition to me. There is no trailer however. Well is this price ballpark or what? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hard to say

Without some major details, it's hard to say for sure but from appearances, it sounds good. Look for deck delamination/leaks around the standing rigging, mast etc. Do you know anyone with a good knowledge of boats who could look at it for you as a mini-survey?LaDonna

Keep in mind that to buy a new trailor for that boat will cost about $2,500 bucks. The chances of finding a used one are, welll its a real chance, and even used my cost $1,500 -$2,000.

hello Tom,the type of keel will determine the type of trailer you will need. As Gary mentions trailers are few and far between, just look in the archives for other owners needing one.Good luckjohn

Got a great deal on mine

Hey Tom,Mine is a 1980 and it came with great trailer, 5 sails, knot meter, compass, and a ton of little gizmos like a grill that fits in the ensign slot etc. The boat was in good shape, but had some blisters that needed to be repaired (which turned out to be quite a chore) and a coat of bottom paint. I paid $3500. The boat also has a lot of great modifications like an oversized busing on the swing keel, racing main traveler, split backstay with that thingy to tighten it down. I looked around a while and think I got a particularly good deal. Even if you pay 4 for it, I think it will be worth it as long as you have the time to get out there and play on it.
