As a side note, what's a reasonable fee for a survey?

I've been quoted $540 and $15/ft so far????
I just had a survey done on a 1990 Cat-30 (which I bought today!); the survey was $570 + fee to haul boat out for bottom inspection. It needed a bottom job, which the owner agreed to pay for, so it was money well spent. I saw a Hunter in the boat yard that has a strange buckled spot in the hull, which he'll probably spend $15k to fix, so I was really glad I'd had my survey done. Plus, my insurer asked for it today...

like stu says, call garhauer. the price you quote sounds much higher than i paid for the excellent garhauer unit. and echoing stu again, read don's book and get his charts. not a big deal, but 2008 batteries have already gone way past my limit.

I have been on this boat, the owners are only a few docks down from my boat. They are good sailors and have taken good care of this boat. They sailed to the Caribbean with this boat a few years ago. They did a lot of updating.

BEAUTIFUL BOAT! You are going to enjoy it. My previous owner's advice to me was to, "Sail the heck out of it. Don't worry so much about upgrades. Look after the engine and rigging, but get out on the water and enjoy this boat."

After the first year of really loving the C-30, and sailing in general, I have subsequently endeavored to "return the favor" to the boat by going through all the systems, from the hull on up, as to rebuild it better than she came to me. You don't have as far to go as some, so don't stay at the dock working on it all the time! :D

My sailing buddy told me: "The reason we use the boat so much is we'll know the next thing we have fix/upgrade!" Sail it first, sail it often, and you will learn what it is YOU think needs to be done. Very often people with new-to-them boats overthink things they think they "need" and find out that they may well have their priorities backwards. FRob's right, get the basics down, learn about your engine and sail systems and the rest will fall into place quite naturally.

Ah HA, so this is where all my pals are hanging out!! Neil, Capt. Ron, Stu..... I never come to just the Cat.30 site, I thought it would be included in the 'all discussions' so this is a nice find for me!

This boat looks so clean and in such great condition. Add in all the recent upgrades etc, my only negative is the small engine. We have the M25xp and I wish it was stronger. I don't know if I would be happy with a less powerful engine, I think that could be a deal breaker for me. If you won't be going long distances where you'd need to motor then it would suffice. Other that that, I love everything I see!

Oh, and the traveler issue..... since I crew (and mail trimmer) on a bigger boat with a very uncooperative traveler, I would want a traveler that works smoothly and well without hanging up under load when you need it most.

Cat. 30s are a blast and are so roomy and comfortable you can't go wrong! Have fun.
