Hello, Perhaps you can help. I am in the beginning stages of sailboat shopping. I recently examined a few boats, one of them a 1981 25' U.S. Yacht. Has anyone ever heard anything about this brand of boat. I know they are out of business, but that's about it. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you! 'Soon to be a sailor" Craig

Made by Bayliner but....

U.S. Yachts were made by Bayliner but they are not the same as the "Bayliner" sailboat that everybody is familiar with. They were made to be a "competitive" sailing boat and the 33, for example, came with rod rigging. My understanding is that they did fairly well in club races. The stern looked like a Peterson design. Many years ago I was seriously looking at a 33 that had been oil-canned; that is when the backstay is cranked up too tight and the midsection buckles. The problem was with the partial bulkhead that could not take the forces. The good part is that the problem was fixable and the asking price was really good. The bad part was I told the dealer what the problem was and how I could fix it so he sold it to someone else. The one I was looking at had fairly new sails and a complete inventory. If you're negotiating my recommendation would be to call it a "Bayliner" and once you got it then call it a US Yachts. Good luck in your endeavour.

I owned one

I bought a US Yacht 25' new in 1981. The boat had an inboard saildrive and was a great little boat. I never had any problems with the boat and it is still sailing. The boat was strong enough to stand up to the winds here in SF Bay. They were indeed made by Bayliner but the name was used by Bayliner to get away from the image of the earlier Bayliner sailboats. If the boat passes a survey, and the price is decent, I would not hesitate to buy one. Rodney Kidd C-38 #297, Flying Bear

I owned a 30

I purchased a 1980 30' and loved the boat for the 6 weeks that I had it.. My partner took the boat out one weekend and put up the jib before pulling up the anchor and rap the jib sheet around the prop and pulled the strut out.. It had a 30lb fly wheel... and the engine didn't quit.. O'well..

great boat

Had exactly that boat for 17years. Purchased new. Only problem were leaks in main cabin. Could never fix them. Great boat. Sails easily. Wonder if it is our boat? Does the boat have name? Ours was "First Offense". Traded for a 1998 Hunter 340.
