We will be replacing the 40 gallon aluminum holding tank on our 1995 Hunter 40.5 in just a couple of weeks. What do we do with the old tank? Can you sell the aluminum for scrap?

My disposal was easy

I was the first to get a new tank from Triple M and they sent a truck from their factory to my home to pick up my old tank. They wanted to be sure that they were building the tank correctly since it was a rather odd shape. They asked if they could keep it and I agreed. Otherwise, I would have taken it to my local metal recycler and sold it for scrap. Unfortunately, since it is not "clean" metal, meaning that there are materials other than just aluminum, you will not get a top price. I think aluminum is going for about 25-30 cents per pound but you might get only half that value. You should check, but even if the value just pays for the car gasoline to get the tank there, at least you are rid of it.

Thanks Rich

My marina manager says he has a guy that would just come get it and then he sells it. Frankly, I don't want to touch the thing after we pull it out so I am thinking that if someone wants to come get it, they are welcome to whatever they can get for it. By the way, my new tank is also from Triple M! They have been great to work with.

same tank and replacement source, different outcome

Sounds like TripleM has the market sewn up on 40.5 replacement holding tanks. I left my old one in the driveway to ventilate after repeatedly flushing it out to eliminate the odor (to no avail) and noticed it was gone one morning. Must have been valuable to someone.

What to do, what to do?

Maybe you could make a table out of it? Regards, Big Joe.

Aluminum backing plates

After you get your kids to clean it of course. Then have them cut it into various size plates for future use.

We ought to...

send 'em back to Hunter Marine "collect" or to the IDIOT who originally spec'd 'em for our '89 - '96 or so model boats!!! They obviously never had high school level chemistry that would have taught them that urine and aluminum don't mix. Wish that bastard had to pay for the holding tank retrofit that so many of us have had to do.
