What do I sail?

Can there be a hull that will let me learn, pulling the boat to and from, setting up quickly and safe with an upright name. Large enough to have a wheel and comfortable berth with some small inboard that is reliable. Enough sail area to "easy sail" all day. Rigged for sole exploring perhaps with my dog onboard. New or used to hold its value. Within fresh water. What do I sail? I must research within reason to be able to sail nest season. Help! I am hooked but do not have my boat.

Walk the docks

Joe, Since you're located in Stockton, spend a day walking the docks at State Park and Orleans Trail. Between the two marinas you'll find well over 200 boats. Most people there will be happy to talk about their boats, what they like and don't like.

Catboat?

Have you considered a catboat? I don't know if they can be found all over or are particular to the northeast. Only one sail to tend, many have inboard diesels, shallow draft for gunkholing. Smaller ones are easy to trailer and rig. Catboats are often the choice of sailors who are downsizing from bigger boats. I agree with Ron. Check out Catboats. Menger Cat

comes to mind. Could be hard to find used and cost dearly new. Good luck with whatever you end up with!

Compac Horizon Cat vs Hunter 27

The Compac it easy to trailer easy to rig. Rigging and launching for the Compac takes about 12 minutes tops. The Hunter is much harder to tow and takes an hour to set up and launch. The Compac has no headroom but nice bunks. The Hunter interior is far superior. In fact the Hunter interior is better than many boats over 30 feet long. Sailing the Compact is easy and slow. It's not to fast but there is not much to adjust. It doesn't heave to like are sloop, but it is very stable and seaworthy. The Hunter is pretty quick and has many sail options and adjustments. My experience with similar Hunters is that they heave to well and are stable enought for any sane weather your likely to encounter.

Thanks.

I am considering Hunter. Last weekend I was guest on a 37 ft and looked at a 30 for sale. The 27 would be a better size for my hip pocket. Thanks for reply.
