Anyone ever replaced a gas A4 in a Cal34 with a diesel? I'm told the one that fits easiest is a Universal. Anybody know?

Universal has a direct 'simensioreplacement.......

But dont forget .... you need to change the entire fuel system, prop. shaft, etc.

Rich, what is simensioreplacement ?

Hi Rich, Forgive my ignorance, but what is a simensioreplacement, and who do I email or call to get info? I just graduated from a Cal 20 to the Cal 34, and I'm in the process of redoing practically everything in the boat. Thanks Jim

Dimensional .........

Ha! Mebee I shood youse a speel cheKer ! Direct DIMENSION replacement..... No change of engine beds or shaft tube required. My only comments are that an A4 to Oil burner switch-out is going to cost $11-14K when you have to change nearly everything: trans, shaft, prop, tank, etc. And the oilburner is going to be MUCH heavier and possibly the boat wont sit quite the same on her water lines. A precision rebuilt and line bored A4 used to be about $3500 from the world's Atomic-4 'guru' -- Don Moyer www.moyermarine.com You can also buy Don's Maintenance and Rebuild Manual and evaluate for yourself if you REALLY need a replacment/rebuild .... as most A4s dont wear out, they corrode away from the inside. Honestly, nothing is 'smoother' than an Atomic 4. Are you SURE you want a jumpy-bouncy oil-burner? But if you are serious about ANY replacment you'd better hurry as steel and 'white metals' are soon to very sharply rise (again !!!) in price due to the high asian demand and the lack of USA steel mills foundries and manufacturers.

A4 replacement

Well Rich, Your right after giving it some thought and talking to a couple of 34 owners who still have the A4 gas, I think the smart thing to do is replace the original w/ a rebuilt gas A4. Rode in a friends today, it wasn't so quiet, but it's much more economical not to have to replace all the other things that go along with a diesel. Thanks Jim

Jumpy Bouncy?

JIM, I have a Westerbeke 30 Disel in my Cal 34. I love it. It was installed when the boat was new, so I don't know much about the change out. I have never had any trouble with it.
