What did you do to your o'day today?

Most of the forums I have either used in the past or are currently using all have a continual thread running showing what others did to their "whatever" for the day. I found those threads to be very interesting and find many good ideas that others think of that I wouldn't think of but will complete after reading about them. If there is such a thread here I haven't seen it yet but if there is, I will delete this. If there isn't, I'll start!

Went to the boat yesterday to fix a few things....the wind was so perfect, and the sky a little scary, but nothing on the radar so instead of fixing, we went sailing for three hours...maybe an 8 - 11 mph breeze and no shifts or gusts, no errors...so we did the right thing as late fall here can bring snow and a frozen lake.....you should go sailing too.

Not this year. Bought the tub in late May and was going to launch but too many items needed updating/repaired so I have spent 4 hours almost every day or more putzin'.....which I can do for hours and hours. I'll have 90% done before snow unless of course snow comes again this year on Halloween. Better not!

always something to do. This year rebuilt steering, pedestal, one thru hull, etc. Now refinishing cabin floor. And cockpit floor. Also refinishing teak...when did I go sailing this year? Next year standing rigging and deck, new sanitation hoses, maybe remove thru hull transducers and get more sailing in between all that.

Today I sailed but my completed upgrade list this season is:
Finish electrical upgrade including Blue Seas 8 Breaker panel,
New wiring,
New LED interior light fixtures, exterior LED nav lights,
New cable clam for through deck wiring,
Re drill bolt hole in rudder, new tiller and connecting plates, all which eliminated slop
New ChartPlotter with RAM swing mount,
New binocs and teak holder,
Teak handheld VHF radio, phone and paper towel holders,
New clam cleats with keepers for topping lift and out haul adjustments (they work great)
AND
New Tolley Rasker Main Sail!!!!!!
All in all, it was a pretty good year! As was the sailing!

Thursday at the boat show, I stopped in at Annapolis Performance Sailing and wasted money on 30' of FSE Robline Dinghy Control Dyneema cored line to use as a new asym tack line. Yeah, I could have just gone with some double braid polyester, but what's the fun of that?

So, today, on possibly the best sailing day of the year, I made sure to fly that chute a lot! I had it up 3 times, launching and retrieving from the cabin. I'm getting good at letting it fly forward around the forestay, then hauling it part way in on the opposite side, THEN steering and gybing the main. I don't know if I really go any faster than when I've got the jib poled out wing on wing, but at least the kite is another toy to play with!

Gudgeons and rebed.

Wind, take a close look at those gudgeons. I found cracks in mine around the welds. What are you going to do next season after all this work is done? Just go sailing?:biggrin:

Brian, always enjoyed your penchant for hi tech lines over plain old double braid.

Went to the lake today (Sun, Oct 18, 2015) and it was very windy so I winterized the Raritan head, then the fresh water system.
I should be out there right now though...5:30 p.m. on Sunday evening....always the very best sailing. I left too soon.

Well we had a nice 70 degree day in Michigan so I decided to tackle the hull some more. Washed with NSF, compounded with 3M compounding, washed again, then 3M Finesse 2 and then wiped with denatured alcohol--not happy. I have seen other boats just shine after the first 2 steps (compound and paste) but not mine. I know the Finesse has a chemical in it to make the boat not look shiny but several others say to wipe with denatured alcohol to get the shine back before the final Collinite wax. Well, mine is not shiny after the Finesse step but I did try a 2x2 section with the Collinate wax and it's pretty shiny so maybe it's OK.

Just wondering if others use a Makita for the final wax step and if so, what wax do you use.

I have not had good success with Finesse. Much better results with Presta products. No need to use any power buffer to apply and remove wax. We apply Collinite with a foam applicator and wipe off with micro wipes, great stuff all.

So the Admiral and I began the passage to our home port on the CT. river with a sail from Mystic to Old Saybrook on Saturday. Blue skies, cooler temperatures, and a stiff breeze provided us with the proper ingredients for an exciting sail on a couple of tacks. We discovered that our tacking needs much more practice, but we learned a bit more about tacking 'Faster horses' and smoothed out a few more wrinkles.... or should I say a few less luffs!!! I enjoyed the heeling, the spray coming over the dodger, and the salt water wash over the bow and foot of the head sail, the admiral not so much...
We took up a transient slip in Old Lyme for the night before completing our passage up the CT river on Sunday. I have to mention the Old Lyme Marina by name as it is one of the best places that we have come to know. I could go on & on about this marina, but I will save that for another post. Our last leg of this passage was unusual from others as it was later in the year, and therefore the weather was interesting to say the least. We started the morning off with below freezing temps., as witnessed by a little dance on a small patch of ice on the dock during our trek to the nearby coffee shop and showers. Further up the river, during our approach to the Haddam bridge, we were surprised by snow flurries!!!!!! The further up the river we motored, the more the clouds settled in over our vessel, until finally as we rounded the bend leading to the pier and the smoke stacks, the clouds broke up and the sun lead us to our winter berth.

Winterized the engine on November 14th...boat is mostly put to bed for the winter....I do have a leaky lazarette hatch that is allowing water inside so I need to fix that before it turns really cold...the screws holes for the hatch are elongated and so I have to fix them before I can reattach the hatch successfully.

The only thing I have done in the last two weeks is to sit in my pole barn, have a cigar and look out at my 26' on the trailer and all wrapped up for winter and wonder why I live where I live. We got dumped 9 inches on November 28'th--that's crazy but I guess it could be worse (snow is all gone now though due to 45 degree temps and rain).

On the otherhand I live in sunny southern California where the sailing is year round. Hasn't always been that way. My early years were spent on the southern tip of Lake Michigan in a small town of Michigan City, so I know the winters so very well. Glad I am not there anymore. The winters stink! Especially if you love sailing. The sailing in the Channel Islands has been unsettled the past month. Strange wind patterns, 20+ then nothing. Must have to do with el nino. My Oday 272 needs no projects so its all about sailing. Nice feeling:) Oops one project, seating my steaming light, keeps coming out of mount. Until next time...
