I was curious as to what the manufactuers suggested retail price for a Hunter 37 cutter for the years 1978 thru 1985. It would be of interest to know how the current market value compairs to the present listing prices of used 37's

Can't find it.

I thought an original owner had posted that answer some months ago. But I could not find it in the archives. My recollection of around $80,000. is probably wrong since I am over 60. :) I know that my '79 is presently worth more than that!

We purchased our 82 hunter 37c from the original owner. The papers indicated that he bought it for around $82,000 I believe. I'm going by memory so I might be a little off.

That price is in 1982 $$

And we had galloping inflation in the '80s that cut the value of the U$D almost in half compared its buying power today. You have to adjust for inflation to get an accurate comparison of the price then vs. the prices of comparable new today.

$180,000

I found a CPI calculator online and plugged in 1982 and came up with this number. I have no idea if thast means anything.

What it means is

It takes $180k today to equal the buying power of $82k in 1982. During the inflationary '80s, a lot of used boats old enough to no longer be depreciating actually appeared to increase in value. They didn't, the prices just kept up with inflation.

Now we know.

How much is a well used '78 Corvette worth? How much is a well sailed '78 H'37C worth? Too bad you did not buy a couple of H'37's. Look at all the fun you could have had.

Thanks

Thanks for you help. It is interesting to see that the value did not fall as much as I expected

Low inflation in the 80s!

Peggy has twice mentioned high inflation in the 1980s, but I think she has confused her decades. The 70s featured inflation as high as 10%, and interest rates over double that! By 1982 inflation was down to about 3%, near where it has remained ever since.

Not mine...

No, that 37 cutter is not mine. I own a '79 H30. There is a 37 Cutter for sale at the Bayou Liberty marina nearby. If you like, I'd be happy to do a little detective work for you to see what she looks like. You can reach me at jthomasx2@yahoo.com if I can be of any help. Any excuse to visit a marina!!! John

We bought our '80 new in December '79

We bought our new 1980 yacht from Havencraft in Sudbury, MA for $54,000. This included shipping from Florida, steel cradle, sail covers and commissioning in Buzzards Bay.

To Mr. Horton.

In the years that I have been on this site I do not recall seeing you here. Do you still own the H37C? That seems like so much boat for that price. But we have to consider inflation I guess. How would any of you equate the price of $54,000. to a new H386 at around $175,000.?
