What constitutes a dinghy? How big a furling drum?

I have gotten lots of good info & support re my O'Day 192 jib/furler problem. My question now is how big or strong a furling drum to buy? Harken has low or high load drums for a few hundred $. Ronstan has a drum for $67 + shipping. I will not be racing the boat, just sailing it around Barnegat Bay,NJ. Is the 192 classified as a dinghy? Thanks in advance, Jerry

A quick reference source for you to look at would be a West Marine catalog. It can give you some basic information in rather concise form. For your boat I would imagine you would in the lower end of the range offered by any of the manufacturers. Then it boils down to a matter of preference and economics.

Get one that is rated for the displacement of your boat. No, not a dinghy in the pleasure boat class.

Jerry, I would give Annapolis Performance Sailing a call at 800 - 729 - 9767

They should be able to help you pick out a good unit based on jib sail area and expected load. Sure, the 192 is a small boat, and sometimes sails like a dinghy, but you may need just slightly bigger than a dinghy unit.

In my experience, APS isn't the most expensive, nor are they the least expensive. But they are extremely knowledgable, and they give great customer support.

At the same time, the chandlery here is another great source of hardware, and they do sell Harken small boat furlers: http://shop.sailboatowners.com/prod.php?14016/Small Boat Furling It also supports the forum.

SBO has been in business for some time, and started out specifically to provide services for sailboaters. I'd give them a call, and see if they can help you choose one. Obvously, the "Cruising" Harken drum would be a shoo-in, but you also wonder if the "Hi-load" model would work, for $200 less…

Jerry, don't forget there's an O'day daysailer (boats under 26') specific forum here: http://forums.oday.sailboatowners.com/forumdisplay.php?f=66
